UCP Suffolk's The Employment Connection Celebrates Outstanding Employers

L to R: Samantha Scherger, Manager of Tropical Smoothie of Bay Shore,  Jan Diamond, Owner of Tropical Smoothie of Bay Shore, Robyn, and Job Coach Rosemary Valentino

Congratulations to Walgreens of Smithtown and Tropical Smoothie of Bay Shore which were honored as outstanding employers at Long Island Working Partnership's National Disability Employment Awareness Month Annual Celebration at Carlyle on the Green on October 23, 2015. Both businesses were nominated by UCP Suffolk's "The Employment Connection."

Robyn has worked at Tropical Smoothie for more than one year and said that it has been a great experience.

"I love working there because it is fun," Robyn said.

"Robyn is an important part of our crew," Owner Jan Diamond said. "Even though she has special needs, she is no different than anyone else. There is no doubt that she will be continuing her employment with us."

Sara, who also uses the services of The Employment Connection, works at Walgreens. She said that the celebration was inspiring.

"It's nice to know there are other people like me who work in all different kinds of jobs," she said.

The Employment Connection at UCP Suffolk assists both job seekers and employers by matching qualified workers with disabilities to the staffing and diversity needs of businesses. Supports for both new employees and employers can be on-going during the hiring transition and as needed for job task changes and promotions.

Time to Trunk and Treat

The  Children's Center at UCP Suffolk hosted its 2nd Annual Trunk and Treat event on October 30, 2015. Students, dressed up in adorable costumes, picked out an array of Halloween goodies in theme decorated car trunks.

"Staff and students had a fantastic time Trunk-or-Treating in the school parking lot," Principal Sherri Glazer said. "This is a safe and therapeutic way for students to ambulate in or out of supportive equipment while enjoying cars decorated in creative themes. Thank you to all who participated and made this a joyful occasion for our students."
