Time for cake
More than 50 individuals with disabilities gathered together to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of The Americans With Disabilities Act at United Cerebral Palsy Association of Greater Suffolk Inc's (UCP of Suffolk) main facility in Hauppauge, NY on Wednesday, July 22nd.
UCP of Suffolk's Self-Advocacy Group, a group of more than 20 individuals with disabilities who seek to enhance their input into government policies, perceptions and services that affect them, hosted the successful event.
"This is a celebration for people with disabilities all over the world," Anthony, president of the Self Advocacy Group said. "Today is a great and very important day."
The event kicked off with a parade around the building in which participants chanted "Unity, Equality!" It also included skits performed by self advocates on the different aspects of the ADA, an open mic and a discussion on the Act.
"The ADA cannot be taken for granted," Jaquan, former president of the Self Advocacy Group told his peers. "We have to take control of our futures."
On July 26, 1990 President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA into law. This federal law prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities and guarantees them the same opportunities as Americans without a disability.
