She's a Survivor
Maria
Maria, a UCP of Suffolk participant for more than 20 years, said one of the most important things that a person can do is to give back. Every week Maria volunteers at Stonybrook University Hospital in the Radiation and Oncology Center. Maria, a breast cancer survivor, had her radiation treatments at the hospital a few years ago.

"They threw me a party and gave me presents when my radiation was over," she said teary-eyed. "When I was here they listened to what I had to say, they helped me and made me feel comfortable."

On a recent day, Maria sat in the Radiation Center and put together informational packages on breast cancer as she listened to her "favorite song" "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson.

"I like to help people and make people happy," she said.

Along with her volunteer work, Maria is also an active member of The UCP of Suffolk American Red Cross Volunteer Support Group. The group, which was formed in July 2010, is the nation's first group of individuals with a developmental disability who are trained Red Cross volunteers. The group consists of 13 trained volunteers who through peer to peer training and presentations share vital information on disaster preparedness and fire safety.

Maria said that she wants to encourage others to volunteer more.

"It is something that makes me feel good because it is the right thing to do," she said

Employees Recognized For Years of Dedication

UCP of Suffolk celebrated the outstanding dedication and commitment of 108 of its employees on January 30th. The achievements of the staff, whose tenure ranged from 5 to 45 years of service, were acknowledged at the 24th Annual Employee Longevity and Recognition Awards Breakfast held at the Hamlet Wind Watch in Hauppauge. The ceremony was made possible by the generous underwriting support of returning sponsor People's Alliance Federal Credit Union.

Stephen H. Friedman, UCP of Suffolk President and CEO said, "A combined total of 1,370 years of quality service from 108 employees tells quite a story. We are grateful to People's Alliance Federal Credit Union for enabling us to reward the extraordinary commitment and dedication of our valued employees at this celebration. It is through our employees' commitment to providing quality services that we are able to fulfill our mission and continue to provide exemplary programs for persons with disabilities."

Rachel Breslin, Supervisor of Adult Day Treatment, received the Chief Executive Officer's Life Without Limits Award for Excellence, the highest honor in the Employee Recognition Program that is presented to employees who most exemplify the agency's mission and values.

Pat Caso, Director of Adult Services, received a special recognition for her 45 years of service at UCP of Suffolk. "It's our individuals that make this agency great," she said.

During the ceremony, two board members also renewed their terms for an additional three years. Those members were Thomas Pfundstein, the new Chair of the Board of Directors and Colleen West-Levy, President of Enright Court Reporting

"I look forward to working with Tom, Colleen and all of our board members to further our mission and to create a life without limits for people with disabilities," Friedman said.
